Welcome to my new series of articles, Building On a Budget. The goal of this series is to help players wanting to start a new faction to quickly build different tournament viable lists for less than $101 while still giving you the option to play the master you desire. The pricing is based off the Wyrd store site pre-tax, so no special online discounts. Additionally, I do include some of the general upgrades in the crews which you’ll need to buy the generalist upgrade packs for the cards and those costs aren’t included in the pricing.

In these articles I’ll be breaking down my purchases into bundles with 3 tiers of recommendation. My tier 1 bundles are, in my opinion, the best place to start a new faction. The tier 2 bundles are fine places to start, but usually are limited in options. The tier 3 bundles are not the best place to start a crew, but if you really want to play a given master, it gives you a place to start. Technically there is a 4th tier, but this is limited to the masters that you can’t make a decent crew while staying within my price point.

So with that all cleared up, let’s get underway with the Guild.

Tier 1
Masters: Lady Justice, McCabe, Perdita Ortega

Bundle 1: Perdita & Lady J ($90)

Purchasing both of these master’s boxes gives you more flexibility than the other options because you can build crews for either master that will work in a tournament environment. The following are the crew lists are a couple examples of what you can build with this purchase.

  • The Guild’s Judgement (Lady J Box) – $45
  • The Latigo Posse (Perdita Box) – $45

(1)Perdita Ortega — 6ss cache
+Trick Shooting – 2ss
(2)Enslaved Nephilim – 3ss
(3)Death Marshal – 6ss
(4)Death Marshal – 6ss
(5)Death Marshal – 6ss
(6)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
(7)Papa Loco – 7ss
(8)Santiago Ortega – 7ss

This list allows you to do the popular papa in the box trick (use Papa Loco’s Hold this ability, then pine box him so it stay on) to buff either Perdita’s or Francisco’s damage output while proving versatility with the three general purpose death marshals. Francisco and Santiago bring in additional damage, help do Hunting Party, can hold upgrades for Show of Force, and of course provide the almighty El Mayor buff (+2 Df and Wp to one model).

(1)Lady Justice — 6ss cache
+Badge Of Office – 2ss
(2)Death Marshal – 6ss
(3)Death Marshal – 6ss
(4)Death Marshal – 6ss
(5)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
+Hermanos De Armas – 1ss
(6)Papa Loco – 7ss
(7)The Judge – 9ss
+Unrelenting Leader – 2ss

Once again you can do papa in the box on the already impressive Lady Justice damage track and still have the flexibility with the death marshals. Additionally it allows you to buff Lady Justice’s defenses to high levels (allowing her to hit back more often) with Francisco’s El Mayor. Be careful to not over-extend, but you can really get Lady J up the table with this crew by having The Judge push her followed by Franc using Hermanos De Armas to push her as well. This crew is a bit more elite with the inclusion of The Judge and Francisco making it more suitable for Hunting Party or Reckoning.

Bundle 2: Perdita & McCabe ($90)

This bundle is very similar to the previous one, but changes Lady Justice out with McCabe. I do think that the previous bundle provides more “core” models if your building up your Guild faction.

  • The Guild’s Judgement (Lady J Box) – $45
  • The Relic Hunters (McCabe Box) – $45

(1)Perdita Ortega — 5ss
+Aura Ancestral – 1ss
+Trick Shooting – 2ss
+Vengeance Bullet – 1ss
(2)Enslaved Nephilim – 3ss
(3)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
+Hermanos De Armas – 1ss
(4)Nino Ortega – 7ss
+Hair Trigger – 1ss
(5)Santiago Ortega – 7ss
(6)Sidir Alchibal – 9ss
+By Your Side – 1ss
+Promises – 1ss
(7)Wastrel – 4ss

This crew plays more or less the same as the previous Perdita list. but adds the promises buff to the crew for more plus flips. The Wastrel also adds some light healing to the crew with its (2) action. The McCabe version would look like…

(1)Lucas McCabe — 7ss
+Badge Of Speed – 2ss
+Glowing Saber – 2ss
+Promises – 1ss
(2)Luna – 4 ss
(3)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
+Hermanos De Armas – 1ss
(4)Nino Ortega – 7ss
+Hair Trigger – 1ss
(5)Santiago Ortega – 7ss
+Tormenta De Plomo – 1ss
(6)Sidir Alchibal – 9ss
+By Your Side – 1ss

McCabe plays quite different then Perdita since he can play as a support master that buffs the rest of his crew by “throwing” his upgrades to other models. The Badge of Speed can reactivate Luna if you need her to get somewhere, then you can toss it to Francisco to give him a speed boost. The Saber is usually getting tossed from model to model as needed (giving any model with a bad melee attack a good one). This crew is quite elite, but everything in the crew will benefit from the promises aura. You just need to make sure you keep Luna protected/hidden if Hunting Party is in the pool.

Bundle 3: Lady Justice & McCabe ($90)

This bundle drops Perdita and combines Lady Justice and McCabe. Once again, if you want to build up your Guild collection, I think that bundle 1 provides more “core” models.

  • The Guild’s Judgement (Lady J Box) – $45
  • The Relic Hunters (McCabe Box) – $45

(1)Lady Justice — 7ss
+Last Stand – 1ss
(2)Scales Of Justice – 3ss
(3)Death Marshal – 6ss
(4)Death Marshal – 6ss
(5)Death Marshal – 6ss
(6)Sidir Alchibal – 9ss
+By Your Side – 1ss
+Promises – 1ss
(7)The Judge – 9ss
+Dampening Field – 1ss
(8)Wastrel – 4ss

The basic idea is the same as the first Lady Justice crew, but you lose papa in the box and instead gain Sidir with the Promises upgrade to buff Lady Justice’s and The Judge’s attacks. The Wastrel adds another versatile model that can run schemes, heal other models, or deal some damage. The McCabe version would look more like….

Lucas McCabe — 6ss
+Badge Of Speed – 2ss
+Glowing Saber – 2ss
+Promises – 1ss
Luna – 4ss
Death Marshal – 6ss
Death Marshal – 6ss
Sidir Alchibal – 9ss
+By Your Side – 1ss
The Judge – 9ss
+Unrelenting Leader – 2ss
Wastrel – 4ss

This list would play like the previously mentioned McCabe lists.

Tier 2
Masters: C.Hoffman, Nellie, Perdita, Sonnia

Bundle 1: Solo Nellie ($100)

  • The Pen is Mightier (Nellie Box) – $50
  • Ronin – $21
  • Executioners – $18
  • Johan – $11

I’m listing this option as tier 2 solely because it involves purchasing some out of faction models instead of staying within the faction. Otherwise, I think the list is quite strong and can handle many situations.

(1) Nellie Cochrane – 4ss
+Embedded – 1ss
+Misleading Headlines – 1ss
+Delegation – 1ss
(2) The Printing Press – 3ss
(3) Phiona Gage – 8ss
+Transparency – 1ss
+Debt To The Guild – 1ss
(4) Executioner – 8ss
+Ready To Work – 0ss
(5) Johan – 6ss
(6) Ronin – 6ss
(7) Ronin – 6ss
(8) Field Reporter – 4ss
(9) Field Reporter – 4ss

Nellie’s main focus in the list is to burn out the opponents activation by discarding cards/evidence and then abuse the power of her propaganda action to push/slow/attack enemies. The embedded upgrade allows Nellie to bring in up to 4 mercenaries without playing the “merc tax” for them, which lets her bring in three solid models that aren’t as commonly seen in guild. Johan is there for additional damage and the Ronin are great anti-charge models that can also hit back. Phiona and the Executioner are great hard hitting models that are ideal for Nellie to give free attacks via propaganda. Finally, the two field reports are great scheme runners that can be surprisingly tough for the opponent to deal with due to disguise (can’t charge) and manipulative.

Bundle 2: Solo Perdita ($82)

  • The Latigo Posse (Perdita Box) – $45
  • Abuela – $16
  • Austringers – $21

I’m listing this option as tier 2 as you can only make a single crew out of it so it lacks some flexibility. That said, the crew is still versatile with the inclusion of austringers and packs a stronger punch with Abuela.

(1)Perdita Ortega — 4ss cache
+Trick Shooting – 2ss
(2)Enslaved Nephilim – 3ss
(3)Abuela Ortega – 7ss
+Hair Trigger – 1ss
(4)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
(5)Guild Austringer – 6ss
(6)Guild Austringer – 6ss
(7)Papa Loco – 7ss
(8)Santiago Ortega – 7ss

Bundle 3: Solo Sonnia ($101)

  • The Torch and the Blade (Sonnia Box) – $45
  • The Latigo Posse (Perdita Box) – $45
  • Malifaux Child – $11

While this bundle does include two crew boxes, its designed around Sonnia since Perdita doesn’t get much from the Sonnia box. This list does lack the papa box trick since it has no death marshals, but you can still keep papa near Sonnia early in the game to give her that much needed plus flip for blasting. The list also includes the Malifaux child as both a cheap activation and allows you to create a second flame wall each turn. The three expert sleuths were added to allow the crew to win initiative on the very important turn 2/3, allowing you to blast away the enemies before they can respond.

(1)Sonnia — 6ss cache
+Cherufe’s Imprint – 1ss
+Counterspell Aura – 1ss
+Expert Sleuth – 1ss
(2)Malifaux Child – 3ss
(3)Francisco Ortega – 8ss
+Wade In – 1ss
+Expert Sleuth – 1ss
(4)Papa Loco – 7ss
+Expert Sleuth – 1ss
(5)Santiago Ortega – 7ss
+Hair Trigger – 1ss
(6)Witchling Stalker – 5ss
(7)Witchling Stalker – 5ss
(8)Witchling Stalker – 5ss

Bundle 4: Solo C.Hoffman ($100)

  • Of Metal and Flesh (Hoffman Box) – $50
  • Ryle – $15
  • Peacekeeper – $35

Hoffman only makes tier 3 because he does really like taking out of faction models that are unusable by the rest of the Guild (so I avoided them in this bundle). The following crew does give him two solid heavy hitter models in the form of Ryle and the Peacekeeper. Alternatively, you could trade the peacekeeper box for a box of metal gamin to buff Hoffman’s casting to an 8, to give Hoff a slow target with OSA, and finally to give Hoff +2 armor on his defensive trigger.

(1)C. Hoffman — 7ss
+Arcanist Assets – 1ss
+On Site Assimiliation – 2ss
+Field Mechanic – 2ss
(2)Mechanical Attendant – 2ss
(3)Peacekeeper – 11ss
(4)Hunter – 7ss
(5)Hunter – 7ss
(6)Ryle – 10ss
+Plant Evidence – 1ss
(7)Watcher – 4ss

Tier 3
Masters: Lucius, McCabe, McMourning

Bundle 1: Solo Lucius ($92)

  • Bound By Law (Lucius Box) – $50
  • Wardens – $21
  • Austringers – $21

Lucius is in my opinion one of the weakest masters in the game right now and that is why I’m leaving him as a tier 3 option. I think this list makes the best use of his crew box by providing you with solid minion models for Lucius to obey and ones that Dashell can buff as well. This crew will do fine in scheme heavy pools, but don’t expect it to have incredible damage output.

(1)Lucius — 5ss
+Secret Assets – 2ss
(2)The Scribe – 2ss
(3)Captain Dashel – 9ss
(4)Guild Austringer – 6ss
(5)Guild Austringer – 6ss
(6)Guild Lawyer – 6ss
(7)Guild Lawyer – 6ss
(8)Warden – 6ss
(9)Warden – 6ss

Bundle 2: Solo McCabe ($101)

  • Relic Hunters (McCabe Box) – $45
  • Guild Hounds – $21
  • Pale Rider – $35

McCabe is a strong and versatile master, but I put him in tier 3 because his starting box set is less then impressive and forces you into make some sub-optimal model picks due to our budget. That said, I still think this crew does have potential in the right scheme pools. The hounds and rider give you a lot of speed and marker dropping potential so play to these strengths. So long as McCabe has his glowing saber being thrown around all models have the potential to do solid damage, especially a late turn Pale Rider. Unfortunately, Sidir and the Wastrel are a bit slow and unimpressive models, but they do give you some range damage.

(1)Lucas McCabe — 7ss
+Badge Of Speed – 2ss
+Glowing Saber – 2ss
+Promises – 1ss
(2)Luna – 4ss
(3)Guild Hound – 3ss
(4)Guild Hound – 3ss
(5)Guild Hound – 3ss
(6)Pale Rider – 12ss
(7)Sidir Alchibal – 9ss
+By Your Side – 1ss
+Plant Evidence – 1ss
(8)Wastrel – 4ss

Bundle 2: Solo McMourning ($95)

  • Body of Evidence (McMourning Box) – $45
  • Of Metal and Flesh (Hoffman Box) – $50

McMourning is stuck in tier 3 because his box is a Ressurectionist box and you need to take an upgrade to even include any of the models from the box in a Guild crew. This made McMourning a bit of a challenge to build on a budget, but I think this is probably the best combination you can make and hold onto some versatility. Once again, while this is a two master bundle, Hoffman literally gains nothing from McMourning’s box. As for the crew, I went with an armored crew because I feel they benefit the most from the inclusion of nurses due to their already tough nature. The nurses can heal the tougher minions back to full health if you can afford to let them be paralyzed for a turn (this list really needs a witchling stalker or Johan to clear paralyze). The crew does also have some potential for high poison damage, but I wouldn’t rely on it.

(1)McMourning — 6ss
+On The Clock – 1ss
+Evidence Tampering – 2ss
(2)Zombie Chihuahua – 2ss
(3)Guardian – 8ss
(4)Hunter – 7ss
(5)Hunter – 7ss
(6)Nurse – 5ss
(7)Nurse – 5ss
(8)Sebastian – 7ss
(9)Watcher – 4ss

I think overall the Guild is very accessible on a budget and I was slightly surprised that I was able to make (mostly) good looking crews with my restrictions. If you think I missed a list or think you could design a better one on my budget, then leave a comment with the list and the breakdown of it. If I like it I’ll add it to the article.
